BCCD Conservation Tech Shandra Nobles (far right) judged Campo’s science fair on February 4th along with Debra Lester, SE Area Extension Agent (center).  There were 19 projects on a wide variety of topics.  Rafe Schroder (far left) was the first place winner with his project:  Making It On The Farm.  “I was very impressed with how well organized Rafe was,” Shandra said, “and how knowledgeable he was about ethanol production.”

Fifty-one agriculture producers from three counties attended Baca County Conservation District’s Prairie Pest Management meeting January 22nd in Springfield. Jim Knuth from Lipha Tech spoke about controlling prairie dogs with Rozol bait.  Mr. Knuth began by detailing prairie dog life cycles and habitat.  He mentioned that 219 prairie dogs can eat as much forage as one cow.  Left unchecked, a prairie dog colony can increase twelve-fold (12x) within 10 years.  Mr. Knuth said Rozol (a restricted use pesticide) offers unique advantages:  palatability, high efficacy, weatherability, ease of application, and low toxicity to birds.

Bob Bolen from P.D. Feeders, L.L.C. demonstrated his AVT mounted, automated dispenser for prairie dog bait.  Bob Dietrick from DuPont also spoke about their new line of products (Cimmaron) for killing snake weed and yucca in pastures.  Lunch was provided by Rozol.
